SURPRISE!

This week I started tutoring a student in my fourth grade class in Language Arts. I started with the pre-assessments to find out exactly what level my student was on. I was really SURPRISED that my student was on a second grade reading level, in the fourth grade. She is a student who gets pushed through the school system even if she is not ready to move on. I found out from my teacher that she does not get taken out for special services at all because they do not want to take them out of class during instruction. I have never seen her in Language Arts class because I am the Math homeroom, but I really want to find out what the Language Arts teacher is doing to help her and other students like her.

Also, this week my students had a benchmark test in Math on Wednesday, and I found it SURPRISING that my teacher let the students buy snacks and drinks during the test. Most students were getting soda like; Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper. Students were buying candy, brownies and honey buns. I am horrified that the teacher let them have this during a benchmark test. How is that going to help them focus and stay on task? It honestly makes me angry just thinking about it.

Can't wait to see what next week is going to bring!
