Tutoring

Tomorrow I start a new lesson with the little girl I tutor, we are reading Junie B. Jones is Captain Field Day. I really enjoy tutoring because I get to work one on one with a student and really develop a relationship with them. We are focusing on retelling or summarizing. I was really surprised as a fourth grader my student could not tell a story in order. First, we will predict what will happen in chapter two (we have already read chapter one). She will then read chapter two out loud to me. After we are finished reading we will discuss the chapter and then I will have her summarize what happened by writing a few sentences and drawing a picture that relates to her sentences. I am a bit nerves because I know she is probably not going to enjoy this lesson as much as the first one. Hopefully everything goes as planned. (:

Another day, another experience!

SURPRISE!

This week I started tutoring a student in my fourth grade class in Language Arts. I started with the pre-assessments to find out exactly what level my student was on. I was really SURPRISED that my student was on a second grade reading level, in the fourth grade. She is a student who gets pushed through the school system even if she is not ready to move on. I found out from my teacher that she does not get taken out for special services at all because they do not want to take them out of class during instruction. I have never seen her in Language Arts class because I am the Math homeroom, but I really want to find out what the Language Arts teacher is doing to help her and other students like her.

Also, this week my students had a benchmark test in Math on Wednesday, and I found it SURPRISING that my teacher let the students buy snacks and drinks during the test. Most students were getting soda like; Mountain Dew, Pepsi, and Dr. Pepper. Students were buying candy, brownies and honey buns. I am horrified that the teacher let them have this during a benchmark test. How is that going to help them focus and stay on task? It honestly makes me angry just thinking about it.

Can't wait to see what next week is going to bring!

My First Week

When I first found out that my partnership experience was going to be in a fourth grade math class, I was a little worried. This is my first time working with students in a higher grade level. I didn't think I would be able to relate to the students like I have been able to in the past. My first assumption was wrong. These past few days in my class have been an amazing experience. My students and teacher were all very welcoming and I know that I am going to learn a lot from my teacher and students.

Tomorrow I start my first tutoring session with one of my students and I am beyond excited. I can not wait to sit down one on one with the student and really get to know her as an individual.

I am always excited to see what tomorrow is going to bring in my fourth grade class. (:
